MOBKA PRESENTS GANG GANG COLLECTION
Growing up, it was all about gangs.
My demographic included young mothers, council houses, absent fathers, crime & community. This “ Gang Gang” collection reflects some of the energy I remember from my environment. Although “Gang” is perceived as violent, angry, unlawful & associated with young people of colour.
The collection is here to encompass everyone. For someone who is unfamiliar with this culture, these garments are snapshots of experiences that my peers encountered over the years.
I’ve included the good, the bad & the ugly. Growing up, friends felt like family & blood couldn’t make us any closer. Within my parameters, I got to choose who was “Gang” & who was an associate. Some of my closest friends have been in jail longer than our time spent outside.
The truth is pretty ugly, but it is my reality. Throughout the “Gang Gang” collection, I’ve used a reflective print as a metaphor. It represents the light in the darkness & raw talent that has been seen in communities like mine. It has happened generation after generation - these environments aren’t so different from each other. You’ll get the feeling of my upbringing with this collection.
